We follow AAHA and AAFP guidelines for vaccinating animals and consider your pet’s age, health, and lifestyle when vaccinating. We do recommend vaccinations, as it can be very dangerous to not vaccinate your dog and cat… deadly in fact. While there are risks to vaccinations such as reactions which can be manifested from mild signs such as sleepiness and a decreased appetite to more severe signs such as vomiting, diarrhea, and shock-like symptoms, these risks are low at our practice and are almost always treatable when they do occur. While vaccine reactions are rare, it is unfortunately not uncommon to lose patients to diseases that could have been prevented through vaccination.

There has been evidence of injections (not just from vaccines but from any injection) leading to fibrosarcomas in cats. Because of these risks we suggest dividing vaccines into “core” and “lifestyle” vaccinations. “Core” vaccines are defined as highly recommended to all dogs and cats and are given every 1-3 years depending on the type of vaccine. “Lifestyle” vaccines are just that- recommended depending on the lifestyle of the pet. This is why we evaluate every patients’ age, health status, and lifestyle before deciding exactly what vaccines your pet needs. We also offer vaccine titers in the event that a patient has had a previous vaccine reaction or has a disease that could be exacerbated by any stimulation of the immune-system.

Vaccination is a conversation that has to be had on the individual level. We are proud that we only vaccinate our feline patients with non-adjuvanted vaccines. While we don’t know for sure if adjuvant is linked to injection site sarcomas, it has been suggested that they may play a role. We also use vaccines that have been shown to last up to 3 years so that we can avoid having to give them yearly as much as possible! We want to make absolutely sure we are doing everything in our power to keep our patients safe, happy and healthy.
